SchoonArt: Ghosts, Guts, And A Thousand Faces

The Image That Started It All

Did you ever go on Reddit at totally random and actually find something cool?
No?
Yeah me neither...except this one time!

Scanning through the Zines (or zinesters) Subreddit, tons of stuff I can care less about, and suddenly a 3 legged mutant walking down a street appears...crazy stipple shading caught my eye immediately (the other one followed along shortly after). What is this? An artist who understands perspective? I had to investigate further! I stumbled upon a more finished version, and then other panels from Gut And Ghost, soon enough discovered His YouTube where he inks and talks. I followed him on Instagram and he went live the next day I think folding zines for an event, we chatted for 5 minutes and then we settled on a zine swap.

The coolness doesn't stop there though, many people will sign up for classes of nude drawing to understand anatomy or use Croquis Cafe videos for practice, but he used a Page of Candid Snapshots of people usually at a boardwalk or county faires in different states in the USA. And my god, it gives you the most unique faces, expressions, skin textures, just everything you would want to learn interesting anatomy. It is also interesting to see so many people who look Human and Inhuman all in one place.

So after a wee bit of watching him post sketches, stages of artworks in varying forms, a package arrives at my door. I had taken a nap and woken up to it, so I woke right up and grabbed the first sharp object I could find and opened it up.

Merry Artsmass To Meeeeeeee

Stickers

I love the amount of realism he is able to capture with the hand or the KIA, but god damn Derpy Batman is fucking killing me, never fails to crack me up whenever I pull it out. Oh yes, Unfortunately I am one of those dunces who collects stickers but has a hard time actually putting them on anything because NOTHING IS PERMANENT ENOUGH....it will probably go on a guitar though, those seem to stick around. THE HORROR OF IMPERMANENCE!

Gut And Ghost Zine

The Main Offender right here, so short, so fun, so weird. I was having a difficult time trying to figure out which panels to post without ruining the fun of the Surreality of Gut and Ghost. Great detail, awesome shading, just a ton of life in each panel. It really stands mountains above most zine artwork I've seen out there which makes this a special addition to my collection. I've sat there watching him ink a few of these panels, so it has another level of excitement to just study the result.

Art Prints

Can we all just take a minute and appreciate This Timelapse of Frank Zappa coming together.

Besides Gut And Ghost his art prints are a total trip to study as well. It has a comic book style in a sense, and you can see some of his reproductions on Instagram that definitely help with that flavouring, but then touches on this realism...it's such a different style that you can really sink your teeth into. The Frank Zappa one is my favourite because I have been listening to his music since my friend showed me the Baby Snakes DVD and my mind still remains blown.

Remember, you can Right Click and Open Image In New Tab to zoom in and see some more detail!

Wüden Boi Album Covers (And Other Artworks)

Wüden Boi's main mancreature, Scufflemoss Treemen and I have formed an alliance many moons ago, and I think it's finally time to reveal the tale...

I remember being somewhere, on some farm, chewing on a cow's leg as the other one was trying to kick me in the face. I guess all the high pitched distressed Mooing traveled over the winds of fate and a group of peasants angrily approached before beating the living piss out of me with farm equipment. I remember waking up somewhere completely different, bruised and confused, and swaying slightly back n forth.

I was on a damn boat! To an unknown location they took me, it seemed like forever and a day.

When we arrived they lead me out onto the beach, kicked my back and set sail without any ibuprofen. Since watching the ship disappear into the horizon was too depressing to watch I gave myself a tour of the island perimeter. Not much to find, seemed as though there was no one really there. Until a few days later inland, I discovered what looked like a visually impaired broken tree branch singing to a group of rocks. Whether he placed them there or they gathered themselves I do not know.

We had a conversation, I asked him if he was from Transylvania, he pulled some bulbasaur shit and gave me a vine whip to the face. After all the pleasantries I suggested he turn himself into a raft and we boogie-woogie the hell out of this death trap and forge our destiny elsewhere. He refused, even after I said please, so we resorted to fashioning one out of coconuts instead and set sail! The seas were choppy, we did a few barrel rolls, but the gods shined opportunity down upon as when we slammed up against another ship.

We climbed up the side and peered through the cannon windows, PIRATES!
We waited until they were all eating in the same spot with their backs turned to us, which is definitely what happens on all pirate ships. We snuck onboard, I went down into the cargo and Scufflemoss made his way to the bow, breaking off the big boobied lady and placing himself there instead. No one seemed to notice because the men were all arguing over an etching of a woman's ankle.

It was going pretty well for a month... I remained down below eating oranges and rats, fashioning myself some new clothes from their pelts. Scufflemoss was enjoying the nice sea breeze except when birds would land on his head. But a month in a stiff position doesn't do you any favours. He couldn't handle it anymore and had to stretch, trying to be stealthy he turned to one side and the loudest dark Thundercrack you've ever heard came from the bow. Every head turned, doors opened, and a mass exodus began. The cover was blown so Scufflemoss did what he could....

"HALT!!!!! You have awoken me and with that I bring you a CURSE!" all eyes bulged from their sockets, a Harryhausen moment come to life! "If you do not stop dilly dallying as a petty excuse for pirates, I will sink this boat and your souls will be shackled to roam the sea for ever more! ETERNITY!!!!!!". A visible shake ran through all the men, gasps and murmurs began as Scufflemoss did some of his best spooky gesturing. He removed himself from the bow and walked upon the deck. One by one the men dove overboard into shark infested waters.

I popped up from a hatch and congratulated him on his performance before realizing now that we have to man (and creature) this boat without knowing anything about navigating the wide open sea, nor which sea we were actually on at this point. So we got to it, it's just a bigger raft, I would repeat to myself as I fumbled the controls.

Everyday was a new struggle of boredom which we filled with pranks, but trying to shove eachother off the boat was getting old very fast so I dug up some old rat bones and crudely carved some phallic objects. We moved from one side of the map to the other, I recall someone call it Chest or something similar, no clue. Around that time Scufflemoss began to sing his melodies and rhymes which always made me fall asleep peacefully. And before long we finally saw a lump on the horizon....

LAND HO!!!!!!
It sure was, solid friggin land for once. We crashed our ship right into these little wooden walkways, people screamed, they were obviously so excited to see us back....although I am not sure I came from this land at all. A boy can dream, Yes?

Over to the left people were examining some vases and cutlery, to the right a man in flamboyant clothing is followed by a gaggle of giggling girls (who all smelled like onions for some reason), but right ahead of me was the livestock center guarded by a little old man. So I took my chance and darted for the first cow leg I saw. CHOMP! My teeth were diggin in, blood down my chin, onlookers howling in terror. The good old days were back in action, and during all that mayhem Scufflemoss said "You should do the artwork for my musical project's album covers!!!!" or something like that, so I shook his hand and got back to my business.

A few hundred years passed since that fatefully tasty day, and we have reconnected.
Now that he finally figured out how to use a computer and microphone there have been a few albums released and live shows played in AH MARE EEKA.

To celebrate his third album coming out very soon I figured I would give you a trip down memory lane with some scribbles I did for the boy since our reunion!

Jared Baker Collection

I had first discovered this artist while clicking through DungeonCritter's page on Instagram after seeing him tag something called Xtreme Corp. Clickity Clackity a few times more and I ended up on Wolf.Baker. I saw some Horserer stuff and then noticed he had actual full fledged comics out on the Xtreme Corp website, and coming from xerox zine mentality I was pretty impressed. He had an underground feel to his art mixed with this professional air. When I finally nabbed these comics I was really hit with how nice everything was.

I stalked, I lurked, I read Horserer on webtoon and then finally grabbed everything I had money for.

If you haven't checked out the short Interview I did with him, you can read it HERE!!!!

Contents Of The Package

HORSERER

I feel like he took Street Trash and made this Psychedelic Punk Metal Medieval Comic. I think I will leave the description at that as to not give spoilers. Life is cheap, death is brutal, goofy humour, and just cool character concepts. The main character's story takes a slow burn buildup while chaos pretty much ensues around him, which took me a minute to get used to, but in the end I appreciated the different approach.

Can we all just take a minute to appreciate the HotDog, Burger, and EGG t-shirts on the one fucking dude? Yes. I think we can. The Egg Shirt was actually the reason I ever contacted him in the first place, I don't know why I thought it was so funny, but it still is. Thank you Egg Shirt.

Shirt Currently Not Available At Hot Topic

I require further information on SKULL BUTT please and thank you

You can see leaps from each issue showing his art improvement. I noticed from Issue 3 the visuals became far more interesting, lots of more dynamic poses and angles going on. The colouring style also started to change on certain characters around Issue 3. Issue 4 although some weird issues with person size, weird hand/arm lengths, and some awkward foreshortening. Those things are easily glossed over for how much the intensity of each panel rises.

One of the many sets of panels that show the vast improvement

BIG BOY

Horserer was already established and had 4 Issues out at this point so I didn't get to catch it from the start, but Big Boy I did. He was posting it in pieces on his Instagram Story. I only remembered Big Boy from the Austin Powers film, I never ate at one, so this ended up amplifying the weirdness a bit. It starts off pretty funny, you go ha ha and feel safe, and then the resistance is futile and you fear the inevitable.

I remember finishing reading it on his story and became really inspired and had this tune in my head, and attempted to record a song and of course told him. Then I hated how it came out, gave up, started writing a Horserer song (like a genius did not tell him) which remains half recorded but at least I like the riffs.

RADIOACTIVE REJECTS
& MITTEN MYSTERIES

Radioactive Rejects he had just posted up on his Instagram and I was immediately interested since this was the first time I've seen him do anything close to a Zine. Both issues are only a few pages long, and it is like a little guide to creatures/people you would encounter while out in Space. Narrated by some Skele-Robo-Space-Cat in a leather jacket. My favourite being Malevolent Murder Mutant and Cratear.

Where Mitten Mysteries is a little different but a guide all the same, to Crytpids in Michigan. I had read those old Weird PA and Weird NJ books so this was a total treat! He threw this one in for free, I didn't even know it existed. The most tragic story were the Melonhead Twins, which honestly I wouldn't be surprised about if it was real. So if you're into urban legends you will enjoy this!

BONEHEAD MAGAZINE

Xtreme Corp's first Comics Anthology featuring the main three fellas Dungeoncritter, Wolf Baker, and Ghostface Chillah. There is a guest artist by the name of Vomit Czar who is absolutely sick at drawing up the undead. The contrast between each artist is exactly what I would want from an Anthology, tons of personality from each artist. The art styles as well as the content shine. Some are completely silent pieces full of tension whether it's Ninjas or a Dungeon Crawl. And maybe you just think Five Finger Death Punch sucks sweaty balls? There is something in there for you too! The Xtreme Corp Mascot even has his own set of pages.

DungeonCritter

GhostfaceChillah

Wolf Baker

Vomit Czar

Wolf Baker

The book is just the right length to give you a taste of each artist's abilities, although it seems Ghostface and Wolf dominate the Xtreme Corp storefront right now, hopefully more from the other artists start leaking into there as well.

STICKERS

He also threw in a few stickers, real good quality awesome designs such as a Kappa , a Jack O Lantern, and a STONED TO THE BONE one. I am a complete dumbass who never wants to use the stickers they get and instead scotch tapes them (only on the back!!!!) to the wall or a mirror so it can be moved or put away. I have always lamented about cool stickers I had during school on my binders that would get rubbed off or the binder would break in half because I'm just THAT Hardcore. So these will also be getting special treatment.

IN CONCLUSION...

Between each publication presented here you get a different helping of madness between each cover. If you want a nice change of pace from boring overstretched superhero garbage, re-reading old classics, or just want to find some new artists I recommend this fella right here. Accessible, Nice, Pleasant at dinner parties and weddi-MEAN GREEN KILLIN MACHINE WITH A FUCKIN PEN REAAAAAAAGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!

Evil Kim Evil Interview

Originally meant to be included in the Asking Artists Questions series but became too big for it's britches and got it's own post!
I was provided with artworks and now it just looks like a cool little zine.
So thanks EVIL KIM EVIL for letting me pester you about art related nonsense!

If you haven't seen the Zine Swap I did with EKE, check it out HERE!!!!

How has it been for you as an artist?

It's been a wild ride! I come from an extralunar plane in Galaxy Zero, which is a long way from Earth. There, we are all rockstars. One day, I was playing a solo as a crowd of other creatures cheered and threw me the devilhorns.

I jumped sky high and . . . accidentally exited the extralunar plane, winding up in SPACE (I was using a wireless guitar doohickey).

Fortunately, I got picked up by a passing space ship. They were going to Earth to cool off in Antartica. They told me they could not return me to the extralunar plane, but they could loan me a human costume.

I ended up disguising myself as a tiny human, showing up at midnight during a rainy California spring in 1979. Two years later, I was transported to Baltimore where I continued to learn the Earthling ways.
I began making art, music and writings as soon as this planet would allow. I am still adapting to life on Earth. Removing my human costume has helped a lot. Now the Earthlings see me for who I am and I can talk more openly about my history.

Your first Triumph?

Being a rockstar on the extralunar plane was a constant triumph. But I'll talk about life on this planet because this is for Earthling audience.

When I was in the humans third grade, I wrote and published my first novel, making all the copies by hand and doing all the cover art. It was a humans "zine," but I did not know this then. It was popular at the humans school so I wrote another one, then published poetry in a humans "lit mag," was interviewed by an Earthling journalist, went to humans "Young Writers Workshop" at Chautauqua, won art contests at humans state fair (even in adult humans division!), began playing humans guitar and making songs in the humans languages, started a zine that would publish anything submitted, left humans high school and TA'd writing class at humans college.

As music dragonoid, I have chosen the underground. I am not accepted in humans society and I will not be anything other than myself. I will not sacrifice my creative freedom to please the humans. So I am DIY. I have played shows in almost half of states in humans "U.S." plus a Canadian province! All as a weirdo one man band with barely any social media presence! I've made many records! And gotten to make music with Earthlings from famous Earthling bands - Stooges, Dead Kennedys and Controllers!
And met a lot of amazing humans, humans bands and other creature bands while touring and not touring! The bands I love the most are unknown, out there pushing boundaries right now and doing new creative things. I am on my own path and all Earthlings are equal in my eyes.

Your first Roadblock?

Ejecting myself from the extralunar plane was a big roadblock. But as for life on Earth . . .
From the very beginning, my art and writings were considered wrong for depicting violence - the same things that exist in human societies and on human tv's. I was not allowed to be in humans "school plays," which hurt me because I loved to perform, and I was sent to humans "child psychiatrist."

Humans family was violent, starting when we moved to Baltimore. That got worse. And then I was not allowed to do art. Not until I was "adult human" and then not until I could afford supplies for it.
I did the last 2 years of humans college at a school with evaluations and a final project for the whole last year. All was good until, in my writing, I exposed humans violence against me. At that point, my academic options were severely restricted, the evaluations were used to attack me personally (as opposed to academically) and my final project was assigned a title that was meant to insult and discredit me. This put me in a tough place because I was also still dealing with violence from my humans family. And the humans high school had had the same reaction to me - chose not to give me a diploma and for no logical reason.

I had just found out that my humans "family" had used a fake social security number for me for my entire time on Earth. This made it hard to get humans jobs and get paid in humans money to pay humans bills.

So I wound up in a bad situation that took nearly two decades to escape. At that point, I started eating humans.

I still don't understand them.

Is there a specific influence that has never
lost it's charm and potency for you?

The music of my home galaxy, and of the extralunar plane in particular. Humans would not understand. I have also always loved the first humans rock and roll music, played by its inventors. This was my first love on Earth.

How do you go about setting Art Goals?

I eat art mixed with other materials and then vomit. I give the Earthlings that.

How do you work? Everyday? In Spurts?

I work on my projects when I am not hunting and eating humans.
How many different mediums have you tried so far?
All humans mediums! Guitar, songwriting, fiction, non-fiction, poetry, painting, drawing, sculpture, comics, film, photography, acting, dancing, comedy, costume design, wacky unskilled drumming and other humans mediums too!

I make all my own merch and do all the recording. I do street art. I've also played other humans instruments, like their bagpipes and keys. I'm a one man band - I stand on the drum pedals while playing guitar - making sloppy noisy punk metal . . . thing! It has spanned many genres, but it's always a little weird. Not pleasant to the ears of humans.

What is something you struggle with
or never have been able to get the hang of?

Communications with humans. Essential to doing anything in human society.

But I come from another place. I'm a dragonoid. I also get distracted by how tasty they look to me.

What was your first Art Sale?

4,996 years ago, I sold a painted banana peel to a five-headed glooogmuush on the extralunar plane.

Who are your favourite artists right now?

Many! Some bands to check out if you're a human or other sentient being - these are bands I've recently played shows with, seen live, or encountered on humans internet: Psy Op, Frida Kill, LeRiske, Manoz Zuziaz, Consumer, Trunk, Keefchamber, Constituents, M.A.L.A., D. Selvagi (one man gang!), Andy Warpigs, The Owen Guns, Landis Harry Larry, Non Residents, Powerwasher . . . Plus! Trust (the French metal band), The Amazing One Man Band, Newtown Neurotics . . . just to name a few! I listen to many bands. Many Earthling bands.

I also have a soft spot for 80's radio metal because it was the first metal I encountered on Earth and I am a rockstar just like those humans. I have been returning to this in the past decade - it brings comfort in uncertain times. 80's pop and hip hop too. When I was new to Earth, the radio was my best friend. It taught me a lot about Earthling society.

I have a weird fixation on 80's Helloween, but so do a lot of Earthlings.

If you've worked conventions/events/art faires which were your favourite ones so far?

Humans music shows are best for art tables - punk shows, metal shows, ALL UNDERGROUND SHOWS! I love and support all genres of humans music.

Have you met, spoken to, or
befriended any of your idols/heroes?

Yes!

Any final words to new and upcoming artists
about to enter the Hellscape that we exist within?

Follow your inspiration and do what you want to do!

Yeah But Is It GWARt? Part III HOME INVASION

As mentioned at the end of last Friday's GWARt post Dum Dum was going to visit and show me the ropes of watercolour painting. There was only one other time in maybe 2008 or 2009 when I bought a cheap as hell Sumi INK Set with a brush that shed so bad I would hate using it and just gave up. I was more into painting Warhammer and WW2 army men at that time. So until 2022 I was dealing with acrylics.

We didn't have much time since we were going out to eat as well as watching 2 GWAR films back to back that day. Of course we Overplanned like idiots, watched only IT'S SLEAZY and to add insult to Injury, Dum forget her fucking Pizza Slice in our car, so I ate that shit with green pepper hot sauce from Cholula. That was my reward for her SCREAMING at about 1,000 Decibels in my left ear for reasons I now forget. So we did our painting session, I drew one of the kids I used to see bouncing around the hallways in elementary school down the Special Hallway across from the Dean's Office.

This session felt almost like colouring digitally except for when I would have too much water and it would bleed into a spot I didn't want it to. I am using one of those Water In The Handle Brush Pen Brushes from Sakura (the Microns motherfuckers) and their Koi Watercolours Pocket Field Sketch Box. The first thing Dum says when I open the palette is "You can tell this is old because the bricks are cracked" fucking elitist JERK, but she was right it was like unused for 9 years in my room back in my Brooklyn Days.

I caught on quick, absolutely hated the drying times and had to soak up colours with a paper towel because I kept trying to go at the speed I am used to with Acrylics and Digital. It does not like that and bleeds. I am so used to colouring things from the Mid Tone and then shading, and finishing off with Highlights. This you have to go from High Tones down to Low Tones, layering and layering and blending and layering. A little awkward but fun nonetheless.

AND IT BEGINS...

Dum Dum: I would like to preface, this IS NOT my character. This is fanart based off an old Matt Maguire comic. With that being said, let's get into it!

Put down the base coat. This is pretty self explanatory, put down all the paint on the inside of your lines. If you like to lay all the base colours first go ahead n do that! I personally like finishing one segment/re-occurring colour of shading before moving on

Beefus: I sketched super fast, did lineart with my Pilot Metropolitain Fountain Pen until she whipped out her PH Martins Ink and I had to break out my calligraphy pens instead, a good choice. I wasn't used to creating skin tones yet so I went straight for base colours on helmet and hair instead.

Dum Dum: So what happens next is slightly darkening the colour you just painted with a little bit of black (don't forget to test out the paint on a separate sheet of paper so you can adjust it to your liking). So you've done this, now you need to imagine where your light source is coming from. Where the light will fade away and darkness is starting to become prominitae is where you start to layer on. Its a little easier to understand what im saying by looking at the image below. Id imagined the light was coming from the top down so the darker areas would be near the feet, bottom of the belly, chin, and some of the upper head/forehead. REMEMBER this is your lightest bit of shading right now, so don't be afraid to let it really cling to everything!

Beefus: Once again played it safe and just buttered the teef, coloured the Drool, and Irises.

Dum Dum: Repeat this process now, but going a little deeper into the shading you had previously laid down. There's no need to add more black due to the properties of watercolour it will automatically make itself darker.

Beefus: Dum had a special tube of Burnt Sienna which she would mix with the tiniest bit of Red, I of course messed that up on my first try, but landed a decent skin tone on my second go round. I somehow shaded by accident on his left eye (his right eye). I added the pink on the gums first, then the eye corners, and finally picked purple for the inner mouth which of course pooled up without me noticing, and when I blew on it the colour spread, and after sopping it up the damage was done. At least the helmet and chinstrap shading looked fine.

Dum Dum: I had decided 3 layers of shading was enough for the body so i moved onto the blue armour parts. The same process as detailed in rule 2-3 is being applied here.

Beefus: I honestly should have left my shading at this, but of course I didn't. Added brown rot to his tooth cracks for the extra BAD BREFF. Another layer on the red although its barely noticeable. A little bit of the stupid inner mouth purple got on the side of the mouth, looks like a bruise. Maybe he has really bad depth perception and forked himself in the lips?

Dum Dum: Shading for blue armour parts and fuzzy skin is done!

Beefus: As I said on the previous version I really wish I left the fucking skin shading alone, its just too dark here, big mistake, looks kinda dirty but then again maybe that is a good thing? I did my final reds on the helmet, and I think I touched the chin strap again, which it didn't need. I notice I really need to think through if I need to shade more or not, there is no Undo Button, but hey you wont know unless you go too far so its ok. OR YOU COULDA TESTED ON ANOTHER FUCKING PIECE OF PAPER.

Dum Dum: Blood time! Blood can be a little tricky to mix but this is usually what i do. Human blood actually has a HEX code! #880808 is the most accurate colour of blood outside our body. So pull that up and try to mix accordingly. What is find is the absolute best is a LOT of red and some amount of black. When you layer on blood, its not transparent like usual watercolor so you want it to almost look solid by adding as much pigment as you can. Blood gets no shading with me, but you can totally do it!

For the blood in the fuzz, I used a sponge (if you cant afford fancy sponge, get a kitchen sponge you're willing to sacrifice) soaked in the same colour as the blood covering him and squeezed out most of it. Then with the little bit you have, dabbed the areas i wanted to have the dried matted bloody fur affect. Same was applied to the teeth and tongue,  but with a streaking motion.

Splatter was done by sopping up some red with the brush, pulling back the bristles, and letting them go. If you dont mind your aera getting messy this is a really fun method to try!

Beefus: As a finale we thought it would be funny to roll up his 6 Attributes, Dum had brought really tiny dice in a glass bottle so I rolled the D6 and he got some crazy ass stats! Le Tard was born.

Dum Dum:
Things to remember:
- You can only layer on top of watercolour, highlighting is basically nonexistent without mixing mediums. (which is totally fine!)

- This is my personal style that took awhile to develop, feel free to experiment and make something way better!

- The type of paper I like is Canson watercolour paper. It is thick as hell and perfect for this style since it breaks down at a lower rate unlike mixed media paper.

- The kind of watercolours I recommend getting are Winsor And Newton value packs, especially if you are first starting out. They have a decent amount of pigment and are pretty cheap.

- There are certain types of brushes for watercolour, but I really don't have a problem with just using general brushes.

CONGRATS!!!! You finished your little boy! Pat yourself on the back and rejoice in pride! If you followed along with this tutorial, feel free to Dm me your finished product! I hope this was at least a little bit helpful in assisting you in your painting endeavors!

Beefus: In Conclusion, it was fun to actually hang out with a person and do some art together. Maddy was there too just sketchin' in her sketchbook since she really dislikes to paint.
